about Frank VarelaFrank Varela was born and raised in New York City, educated in Puerto Rico and the Midwest, and eventually settled in Chicago, where he lives today with his wife and son. He has published two volumes of poetry, Serpent Underfoot and Bitter Coffee. The latter is available (at the time of this writing) from MARCH/Abrazo Press. His children's stories have been published in Front Row, and in publications by Arte Publico Press. Other noteworthy journals featuring his work include Another Chicago Magazine (ACM), Halogen, Hammers, The Americas Review. He is also featured in the well-known Guild Complex's anthology Power Lines, published by Tia Chucha Press. Mr. Varela holds degrees from the Catholic University of Puerto Rico, Central Michigan University, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was named Hispanic Librarian of the Year in 1997 by the Illinois Secretary of State, and he his writing has earned him grants and recognition from the Illinois Arts Council.
