Mark Perlberg co-founded the Poetry Center of Chicago with peers Lisel Mueller, Martha Friedberg, and Paul Hoover in 1972, at the behest of Paul Carroll. The Poetry Center has since done much to advance new writing in the city of Chicago, while broadening horizons for Chicago writers elsewhere.

Perlberg is the author of three volumes of poetry, The Impossible Toystore (LSU Press, 2000), The Feel of the Sun (Swallow, 1981), and The Burning Field (Apollo, 1970). He has also contributed to the magazines The New Yorker and Poetry. In 2002, he was a Lannan resident at Marfa. Mr. Perlberg is a widely esteemed author in Chicago, often participating at grassroots events as well national-caliber readings.
